The Gawno Magazine: 78 Photography Rules for Complete Idiots

  • Kristen · 4 months ago
And all the rules can be ignored depending on the effect you are going for.
  • rambazamba · 4 months ago
i hope this is not for real... otherwise you don't understand anything about photography at all
  • FijiFi · 4 months ago
these aren't funny, half of the "don't" ones are better than the "do" ones. almost all of them are, they are more interesting.
  • bethany · 5 months ago
I disagree with majority of these and I'm a photographer.

#7- don't you remember one of the basic photography rules? Rule of Thirds.

#61- What decent photographer takes pictures of cell phones?!

#65- The so called "wrong" picture is more artistic than the "right".

#52- So what if I want to photograph a dead flower...

#78- Wow...i mean...geez. Not all of us are flawless, jerk.
  • Paul Manoian · 5 months ago
This has to be one of the funniest photography "How To" lists I've ever seen!
  • :) · 7 months ago
    wykop.pl pozdrawia!!! :)
  • szuman · 7 months ago
    hehe nice job :)
  • David · 7 months ago
You should use the rule of thirds or the golden rule to align the subject of the photo off centre, rather than centre the subject.
  • Joviano · 7 months ago
    Fantastic! Nice work, congrats!!!
  • Gabriela · 7 months ago
    awesome!
  • guto · 7 months ago
essa é para nunca mais errar!!!
  • Degial · 7 months ago
But most of all ... while creating an art there is one main rule... it is not all about right and wrong, it is all about the vision... Have a good one!
  • blur · 7 months ago
why would you post this. there are no rules to photography. its an art. granted sometimes people are stupid about taking photos but its still a photograph containing expression and an artist's view.

    this is terrible.
  • alter · 7 months ago
    8) (ps the 33 wrong has some interest ;)
  • Richard Michie · 7 months ago
I think I like some of the "wrong" ones
  • Tamron Lens · 7 months ago
Great, all the ones on the left is how my husband takes pictures :-)
  • Steven · 7 months ago
    What a heap of crap.
  • pariah · 7 months ago
    Agree with Steve
  • scott · 7 months ago
    also agree with steven.

i think you failed at your attempted humor here, sorry

at least i hope you weren't trying to be serious here
  • Vahe · 7 months ago
    Agree with Steven! :-D
Guys, it's sarcastic post and just for fun, not more :)
  • Teatime · 7 months ago
Now I know, what I allways did wrong... :-D
  • Col · 7 months ago
This is really pointless. I thought the point of art was to do whatever the fuck you wanted. Why should I have to follow your stupid rules? If you're going to give me rules, at least make them good...
Just remember, the reason other people make these "mistakes" is because they don't value your opinion. Don't bother giving me a nasty comment back because I'm never going to check this site again.

  • bshizzle · 7 months ago
i can't believe the infants that are taking this seriously!!!
that cracked me up as much as the 78 rules...! :-)
  • Mel · 7 months ago
Okay... i cannot back away from saying how this is not something anyone starting out in photography should read....
I apologize to the person who posted this, but there are so many things wrong with what's been posted

1.) Rule of thirds. Learn it, use that when focusing on a point, it will allow you to have a larger range in terms of depth of field, and allow you to concentrate on your focal point more efficiently.
2.) The things you are trying to mention about capturing, and not capturing when taking photographs.... Some of these issues are unavoidable depending on your situation and location, and every other factor that is beyond your control. Unless you somehow use a studio at all times.
3.) landscape photography is just that.....unless you specifically want a human in the photo do not wait to capture it when there is someone, its like having a bug on your lens otherwise
4.) Over exposure and under exposure can be a great way to enhance certain aspects of a photo, its just like playing with lighting angles.
5.) Using a flash. Not something anyone I've ever known has overly recommended when it comes to photos. It way over brightens areas unless you are using a diffuser, and even then, can still have scorching, and hot spots. If you do use a flash, you should invest in a high end one.
6.) Yes.... we do know that trying to capture something is good...please don't make us feel like idiots when it comes to not managing to get something in the frame because it happened to move a bit too quickly.

... and last but not least, don't listen to what anyone else says about right and wrong when it comes to photography. Its a personal vision, do what you want with it.
  • rakeif · 7 months ago
I don't agree with quite a few of these. Doing things wrong makes things interesting.
  • dsf · 7 months ago
yeah.... this post is basically crap since alot of them are wrong.... plus bad weather especially rain, overcast, whatsoever is a fantastic time to take photographs due to bouncing light and you can get some very aesthetically pleasing photographs that come out of photography taken in bad weather... this post is not something to read when you want to learn photography
  • ellie · 7 months ago
hey you suck. so many of the "wrong" photographs are awesome. you have no soul.
  • Mimi · 7 months ago
Okay, I suppose it's possible I'm the one missing the point - but I think that in fact a lot of the comments posters are missing the point. The oversimplification is just plain funny - I can't imagine that the person who created this piece doesn't know that in fact it's often far more visually appealing when the photographer has done x, y, or z which he's listed here as "wrong". But pretending (I assume) to simplify everything to such an extreme is funny. Pure and simple. And some of the pictures are hilarious.
  • barefoot · 7 months ago
Man, I keep forgetting about number 15! All my pictures look the same because of it.
  • yeahok · 6 months ago
HAHAHAH YOU GUYS jesus this is supposed to be comedy, not serious. LOL get a sense of humor..

  • ega · 6 months ago
Photo that you say wrong is more have art.......
  • Jeff · 6 months ago
A lot of you are idiots. Take a look at "wrong" and "right". His point is, both are valid art.

Rules in art exist as guidelines only, not doctrine.
  • Jonas · 6 months ago

this is retarded. what even more retarded are all the approval comments i see from readers. no rules people. just a good eye to capture a moment. all these gimmicky techniques are just gimmicks.

    remember Duchamp's toilet? yea.
  • rosie · 6 months ago
79- And if you are a photography student.. ignore all above rules.
Except the one about holding your camera at an angle.. It doesn't make your picture any better or more artistic people!!
  • Austin · 6 months ago
Many would disagree with a bunch of these.
  • znd · 6 months ago

  • kibastos · 6 months ago

  • Ed · 6 months ago
Thank you. I really think all your tips makes a lot of sense (common sense); although most can also be considered as reminders for the photographer who, sometime, has a lot going on in his or her head.
  • johan · 6 months ago
I actually disagree with a whole lot of these.
  • dan guzman · 6 months ago
nice post, I giggle a bit on some rules.... anyway crap can be art and for some, art can be crap... no rules is absolute but good humor though...
  • Zuzu · 6 months ago
You put together a very nice and funny guide...weren't some of the pictures taken in Prague?;)
  • Evie · 6 months ago
The fact that you had to actually specify that this was not a serious list is even sadder than the amount of abusive comments on this post. Awesome list, and people need to get a sense of humour.
  • m1ply · 6 months ago
I am sorry, but this is the worst post on photgraphy I've read so far. Useful tipps like the "rule of third" have been omited whilst the tipps given are actually pretty common.

Moreover photography is art! There is no right or wrong in the first place.
  • Torsten · 6 months ago
I'm a professional photographer, and I think some colleauges should simply follow the rules. Some should just forget about them. I LOVE IT! IT'S HiLARIOUS! My favorite is 32......

  • Bim · 5 months ago
Some of these ... I like both right and wrong photos! But as you say, these rules are for complete idiots, which I am not. Some of these rule you'd think would be fricking obvious! Funny stuff !!
  • Sakana · 5 months ago
Maybe some part of this article give the good basics for the beginner. But a lot of rules are really wrong, and definitively kill the creativity of the photographer.

Seriously though, this is awesome, although I must admit that the angry rambling comments from the people who don't get that the post is a joke are almost funnier than the post itself.

  • blauwgestreept · 5 months ago
Hilarious rules with even more hilarious comments!
  • Rudy · 5 months ago
    You are so dumb
  • dude · 5 months ago
really, if you want to be a good photographer you should learn everything you can. Understand everything you can achieve with a camera and then go out and take those shots. There are no rights and wrongs when you're the one trying to get the shot YOU want. I know the post was supposed to be helpful, but if anyone follows this strictly they limit their ability and potential to capture something honest and unique or even more so any type of feel they want.

But yeah i guess if this is a post for non-serious photographers otherwise "idiots" then i guess this is pretty helpful advice when not trying to think about what you actually want to do, but take a quick nice shot.
  • dude · 5 months ago
you know what.. i'm the idiot for not reading this whole post haha. good one
  • kristina · 5 months ago
Yeah, and then sometimes it's better to break the rules.

  • harry · 5 months ago

  • andie · 5 months ago
Just to point out.. having your subject in the centre of your photograph actually is less visually intresting than if the subject is off centre.. Rule of third..
  • jacqueline · 5 months ago
hahahhahahaha i think its funny, and also art!

    p.s.
have you guys never heard; 'if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say it at all'?

SON ALGO ESTUPIDAS ESTAS RECOMENDACIONES LA NETA ALGUNAS HASTA EQUIVOCADAS CHALESSSSSSS
  • vudude · 5 months ago
Briliant... simple and practical advice in an easilly understood form with clear examples. Now you too can take completely normal and boring photos that look just like a trillion others and will be easilly forgotten in under 2 minutes. But unless you really are a complete brain dead moron you already knew that didn't you? What a complete waste of bytes and bandwidth! Now I'm also stating the obvious... maybe we really are seeing the decline of civilization and the devolution of humankind? We had a renaissance half a millenium ago... now where are we!?! OK lets try to be constructive... here's a suggestion... live dangerously... why not tonight instead of having your daily bath a 6:00pm, leave it 'till 7:30!
  • Gary · 5 months ago
Most of your tips are useless. The wrong ones stand in the way of humans creativity. Each photo tells a story. Think about that...
  • trinaB. · 5 months ago
I dig the high saturation, even if it is "wrong"...just saying :)

Pretty hilarious though--lens caps + fingers + etc.
  • Nársk · 5 months ago
The "obvious" ones were funny. Some were just puzzling: why does the car need to be moving (that's actually really hard to do)? Why is it better to have people in landscapes? My favorites were the odd ones: when you photograph onions, or sausages, or whatever.
  • Meg · 5 months ago
Nifty, although some of the "wrong" images are more fun and interesting than the "right" ones, in my opinion. What does that say about me? Hehe.

    Garbage.

  • dker · 5 months ago
I prefer all wrong pictures !

You should take a look at "le manuel de la photo ratée" from Thomas Lélu:

    http://www.amazon.fr/Manuel-photo-rat%C3%A9e-Th...

I believe that everything is possible.
"Wrong" picture are fun, personal, reflect life, and all kind of emotions.

So, there is no rules at all.
    Just try, experiment and play!

Wonderful advice! I shall become an onion and sausage photography master!

And LOL @ the hate on this article!
You people need to get a sense of humor and chill out!
Apparently photography is "serius bisness" :D
  • redhairsword · 5 months ago
Most of these rules are for taking pictures that are comprehensible.
If you want to take pictures that are "artistic" you should have a good base in what is normal and easy to understand before you start trying to work outside those confines.
Sure, you can mess around like Mann Ray with your photos, but you should have an understanding of what you're doing first.
I can't understand anyone getting all angry about rules like "don't photograph drunk." "Remember to remove the lens cap" and "Don't get your shadow in the picture."
  • Rana · 5 months ago
This is hilarious! Also hilarious are the comments from people who take this seriously. It's a JOKE, people!

It's making fun both of bad photographers and of people who try to reduce photography down to just a bunch of rules.

I can't believe that this actually needs to be explained - it's pretty obvious!
  • Paul Pacurar · 5 months ago
I don't agree with all these rules. I mean, yes, for complet Idiots seem ok (although.. why shouldn't they make some artistic nice photos... by chance!? (breakin' the rules)). for example, rule two: some of best compositions have some distracting elements which avoid the eye looking directly on the main subject. They create a sort of progression.. it's very effective.
  • Brad · 5 months ago
Garbage. A lot of the 'wrong' pictures were more interesting and better shot than the 'right' pictures.

You've made my evening. I love the expressions of some of the people and I always wished I could come up with these things to make others laugh. This collection of rights and wrongs is completely worth reading. That is, if your mind is open to different types of humor for those who take things more seriously. Thank you for making me smile. :]
  • Cyril · 5 months ago
This is excellent on so many levels. ;)

Anybody who does think these are serious "rules" is indeed a complete idiot! (or taking the internet way too seriously)

  • Uli · 5 months ago
good job and more than 90%, when filtering the humor in it, are really helpful. ;o)
but with point 16 i totally disagree.
Portraits in bright sun should be made against the light but with assistance of a flashlight to lighten the person up.
if you take the photos with the sun in your back, the person is allways blinking due to the too bright light.
and point 7 - no, the center is a boring place for a person in portrait. try to use the simple "two-thirds-rule"
    rgds, uli

    #65 - unless you're strobist...
  • Barry A. Martin · 5 months ago
    @ammre – ditto.
Good guidelines for not sucking, but that's a pretty low aspiration.
I know you're not serious about this, but in case there are any budding artists reading, try ignoring the individual guidelines selectively to make your pictures interesting.
if you deconstruct cinema frames, you'll notice how much depth you can add to an image by the choices you make on each one of these points.

  • tommypeterson · 5 months ago
    funny stuff
  • cergacarnic · 5 months ago
"Do not lead us into temtation" and follow these advises! Some are funny, some are wrong, some pictures marked "wrong" are much better then their "right" alternatives. This is puer help for bigginers.

some good rules there, and some good contrast in your images. yet, 75% of the pictures are centered, talk about boring. Try using the golden ratio or rule of thirds in a few of them. Or if you insist on centering make sure the focal point is just off center, it makes for a more interesting image. also, you can have diagionals in a picture and it can still work.

uh... this was an unrealistic take to photography.
yes,you want to make sure your picture isn't blurry and whatnot, but having different angles and having lines and different exposures and shadows is what makes every photo unique.
you can't tell someone there an idiot for experimenting.

i think your an idiot, and don't understand the ART of photography at all, it is not "better" to center a person in a photograph, its not appealing, and if you look through these photos, half of the "bad" ones are better than the "good" ones. Idiot.

The author (Ivars Gravlejs) is obviously making fun of it, I flipped through his pictures and many of them look like those described in the "wrong" category (and I like them):
    http://ivarsgravlejs.com/pages/myp001.htm

The title reads "78 Photography Rules for Complete Idiots" i.e. if you want to be a complete idiot, follow those rules rigorously.

    I don't see anything wrong with no.34...
You just flip it over, whether digital or film :)
  • Dark_c · 3 months ago
ROFL ... so funny, but the best part of it is getting to the comments and find put that some poor dumb guy takes it seriouslly ... and even more is outraged by all this "rules" because he makes "art" ... LOL LOL come on, you can spot this joke with a laica ;)

    Great :D
My favourites are the bird and the cloud rule :D

And its so funny, how the i-am-so-serious-and-pro-photographer-fags are taking it seriously :3
    Have nice days!

I personaly think that photography is something that needs to be expressed. These are some good tips yes. But without thinking outside the box, your photos are going to be nothing new and interesting. For example on 52, I find the dead flower more interesting than the alive one. The alive one is to boring, to normal. It could have been a better perhaps to the side a little more like the rude of thirds. If anyone of you reading this doesn't know the rule of thirds. I would highly suggest looking it up. It can improve your photography so much more.
  • 4andyregan · 2 months ago
the whole point of rules is to break them and do the opposite, creativity is only expressed by being original
  • LukeJ · 2 months ago
Art itself is ridiciulous if you think about it, its the only way in which a famous person can do something that is absolutly shit and people will think wow thats good....like a picture of a toilet, was worth £100,000!! for a picture of where he/she has just walked into the bathroom taken a picture aand people are like woowwwww he's really used the composition rules there.NO he hasnt, he walked into his bathroom on the way for a piss and though "hmmm i bet il get payed loads of this" *snap* "suckers"

Funny, many times your "wrong" photos are so much better then the "right" ones.
    Can't you see this?
